Chapter Six

Doc stepped up and shook his head. “Your brother isn’t going anywhere at the moment, young lady. And I don’t think you should either. You took a hell of a beating from falling. You lost a lot of blood and have some health issues going on.”

“Come on I’ll show you where you can rest.” Spirit nudged her.

Ressa let out a sigh and nodded. “Ok. I guess I’m a little tired.” She turned to Grant. “So glad you’re back and safe.”

“Well, I’m not sorry to say I’m glad Carmen Brago is dead.” Grant frowned.

“He was your half-brother,” Luisa reminded them.

“No he wasn’t.” Grant shook his head. “He was barely human. I looked in his eyes when he shot my dad. There was nothing there, no sign of compassion, no sign of even the basic elements of humanity. It was just like looking into a dark hole. The man had no soul.”

Luisa looked upset as she tried to explain, “But if your father was Francisco—”

“Patch Bowen was my true father,” Grant cut her off. “As far as I know and that doesn’t end just because he’s dead.”

Luisa felt GTO wrapped his arms around her and she was happy for that much at least. She shivered in his arms and he drew her closer.

Ressa reached out and tapped her brother’s arm. “Let’s remember Francisco was her uncle and she’s known him all her life, whereas we never got to meet him.” She turned her head and looked at Luisa, “But he’s correct in saying Carmen was not our brother. We never knew him and now we never will. I’m sorry for your loss but he meant nothing but pain to us. I hope you can understand that.”

Luisa nodded. “I can and for what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”

Grant snorted but didn’t say anything.

Ressa got up and leaned over to kiss him on the forehead. “Behave. She’s trying and we can’t hate her for that. She told us how to find you.”

“She has to know the type of man he was then and I won’t pull my punches. I can’t, you know me the same as she knew him. Mom made her choices back then and she walked away from all of us, not just Patch, she left us behind too. To go to this Francisco guy and that cost her, her life. We didn’t ask to be his kids. Patch was more of a man than this Francisco ever was. Hell, we’re twenty four and we just found out Patch was never our real father, but you know what? That’s because he was our real dad. He chose to raise us when he didn’t have to. He chose to love us when he didn’t have to. So when this is over, you’ll have to show me what you found. I’d like to read that stuff to settle my mind about our mom.”

Ressa nodded. “Ok, I can do that, but I will tell you one thing, it’s a good thing she walked away and stayed away.
